Steam Trade Holds Explained

The single most common reason a first sale fails is not the marketplace — it is a Steam restriction that nobody warns you about until your items are already frozen for fifteen days.

What a trade hold actually is

A trade hold is Valve's mechanism for delaying the delivery of traded items. The trade goes through, both parties confirm, and then the items sit in limbo for a defined period before landing in the receiving account. Neither party can cancel it and no marketplace can override it — the hold is enforced by Steam, not by whoever you are trading with.

Valve introduced holds as an anti-theft measure. If an account is compromised, the delay gives the real owner a window to notice and recover items before an attacker can move them beyond reach.

The part that catches people out: the hold applies to you based on your account's security state, not to the marketplace. Switching to a different platform will not help. If your account is subject to a hold, every trade you make anywhere is held.

The 7-day rule

To trade without holds, the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator must have been active on your account for at least 7 days. Not Steam Guard by email — the mobile authenticator specifically, in the Steam mobile app.

If it has been active for less than 7 days, your trades are held for 15 days. This is why so many people hit the problem exactly once: they decide to sell some skins, install the authenticator that same day, immediately make a trade, and then discover their items are frozen for two weeks.

Your account stateTrade outcome

Can a trade hold be removed?

No. There is no way to cancel, shorten or bypass an active hold — not through Steam Support, not through the marketplace, and certainly not through any third-party service claiming otherwise. Once a trade has entered a hold, the only option is to wait it out.

Scam warning. Any site, Discord user or "service" offering to remove a Steam trade hold is a scam without exception. The usual approach is to ask for your API key, your login details or a "verification trade" — all of which hand over your inventory. Valve provides no such mechanism, so nobody can resell one.

How to avoid it entirely

  1. Install the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator now, before you need it. Steam mobile app → Steam Guard → enable. The 7-day clock starts from that moment, so doing it a week ahead of any planned selling costs you nothing.
  2. Do not remove and re-add it. Removing the authenticator resets the 7-day timer completely. Changing phones without properly transferring the authenticator has the same effect and is a common way people accidentally reset themselves.
  3. Keep your recovery codes. Losing access to the authenticator means removing it through support, which restarts the timer and blocks hold-free trading for another week.
  4. Set your inventory and profile to public. Unrelated to holds, but it is the other reason marketplace connections fail, and it is worth doing at the same time.
  5. Wait the full 7 days before your first sale. Test with a low-value item first if you want to confirm everything works before moving anything expensive.

Other Steam restrictions worth knowing

Items recently acquiredNewly traded or purchased items carry their own cooldown before they can move again

What this means for selling

Practically, the trade hold rule means selling skins is never a same-day decision if you have not prepared. The fix is trivial and free, but it takes a week of waiting that you cannot compress. Anyone planning to cash out an inventory should enable the mobile authenticator as the very first step, then spend that week doing the useful part — checking what items are actually worth and comparing marketplace fees — so that when the hold clears you are ready to sell rather than starting your research.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 15-day hold apply to buying as well as selling?

Yes. The hold is a property of the account receiving items, so if your account is subject to a hold, items you buy will also be delayed before they appear in your inventory.

Does email Steam Guard count?

No. Only the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator in the Steam mobile app removes trade holds. Email-based Steam Guard does not.

I changed phones and now everything is held. Why?

Moving to a new device without transferring the authenticator through the app effectively removes and re-adds it, which restarts the 7-day timer. There is no way to shorten it.

Can a marketplace waive the hold for me?

No marketplace has that ability. The hold is enforced entirely by Valve on the trade itself. Any platform claiming it can bypass holds is misrepresenting how Steam works.

Will my items be safe during the hold?

The items remain in escrow with Steam and are delivered automatically when the hold expires. Neither side needs to do anything, and the trade cannot be reversed while it waits.
